synopsis

This beautiful historical drama captures the struggles and passions of a remarkable woman. In 1915, Helene Schjerfbeck, who in time would become Finland's most acclaimed painter, is a forgotten artist living in the countryside with her elderly mother. Years have passed since her last exhibition, but she has continued to paint, her passion for her work unabated. Everything changes when an art dealer discovers Helene and her remarkable paintings, and wants to organize a large solo exhibition. Then an encounter with amateur painter Einar Reuter, a fervent admirer of Helene's art, leads to the two becoming confidantes, and he the unfulfilled love of Helene's life.
