Bandits (1999) (R)

synopsis

The impressive rap sheets of Marie (Jutta Hoffmann), Angel (Nicolette Krebitz) and Luna (Jasmine Tabatabai) have landed them in a women's prison in Southern Germany. At a loss to find a decent drummer among the inmates, they write songs and record garage tapes in the prison chapel. The rough demos are posted with a prayer to the premiere rock label, Gold Records . . . where arrogant music mogul Gold (Peter Sattmann) snorts lines of coke off his desktop and tosses the penitentiary tapes into a waste basket. When a valkyrian jazz musician, Emma (Katja Riemann), joins the prison population, bests Luna in a challenge for dominance and pounds out solid percussion riffs, The Bandits are born - just in time for a campaigning politician to book them as the musical guests (and perfect photo opportunity) at the annual Policeman's Ball.
