Semper Fi: One Marine's Journey (NR)

synopsis

For Jeff Key, first there is God, then there is country. Born in the small Alabama town of America Junction, he had family, friends, and faith. Aided by the love of his parents, Jeff came out, despite living in a community that considered him an “abomination.” After moving to Los Angeles to begin living his life as an openly gay man, he found he could not ignore the foundation his life was based upon. So, at the age of 34, Jeff Key chose to serve his country as a Marine, eventually being deployed to Iraq. This remarkable documentary interweaves conversations with family, friends, and fellow Marines to tell the story of a boy from the South who only wanted to serve his country. Key found himself shaken to his core, however—not because he was gay, but because serving his country was not at all like he imagined.
