Motherland Afghanistan (NR)

synopsis

Afghanistan's maternal death rate, outside of Africa, is one of the highest in the world. This documentary reveals the devastating stories behind a reproductive health crisis essentially neglected by the Western media. It also addresses a crucial question--in a post-Taliban Afghanistan, will women finally gain the human rights they have been denied? When the United States invaded Afghanistan in October of 2001, Afghan hopes were high that democracy would bring enormous progress for Afghan women in the arena of health and education. But more than two years after the U.S. war, one of their most fundamental rights--to adequate healthcare--has not been met.
