The Barbershop (La barbería) (PG-13)

synopsis

Benny has been guarding his family's small barbershop in Washington Heights for years with the help of his uncle Cheo, but times are changing, and money is needed. The neighborhood is full of shops closed and the barber shop could be the next to leave, even though immigrants from the area already consider it a sanctuary full of traditions and culture in its block. After putting his building up for sale, Benny must face the demands and objections of the surrounding Dominican community.

With a lucrative offer on the table, he begins a strong confrontation between Benny, his sister Nury and Cheo, a man who wants to protect the barbershop where he has worked most of his life. The situation is derailed when word spreads about the impending sale, and everyone, from Benny's impetuous girlfriend to the gossip in the neighborhood, begins to imagine what they would do with all that money. As the pressure to sign the papers increases, Benny must make a final decision: sell the family business to the highest bidder or keep the barbershop afloat and honor its roots.
